Development Alternatives, New Delhi

DA (Development Alternatives) is a not-for-profit (NGO) based in New Delhi that has for 26 years been promoting sustainable national development in India to eradicate poverty. This means creating development projects that can be scaled up, are renewable, and result in jobs.

A key to DA’s success has been incubating low-cost innovative rural technologies, from village power generators using biomass, to literacy and capacity building.

DA has been the main implementation agency for Tara Akshar, ReadingWise’s flagship literacy program. DA, funded by DfID (UK Government’s development arm), Oxfam India, Telecentre.org ( Canadian + Swiss Governments + Microsoft), Suzlon Energy and others, has set up over 300 literacy centres across northern India and has made over 50,000 women literate in the last two years.

ReadingWise

ReadingWise invents desperately needed learning programs that no one else has built. We build programs for NGOs, corporate and schools. We teach illiterates to read, the shy to speak and everyone to learn everything twice as fast.
